Bill Reid: Xhuwaji, Haida Grizzly Bear
The Royal Canadian Mint's exclusive 2020 gold coin is precision minted in a premium quality proof weighing 1 Oz (31.16 g) in the finest 99.99% pure gold. The coin is being released to mark the 100th anniversary of artist Bill Reid's birth and features one of his favourite Xhuwaji motifs - the grizzly bear in Haida art.
The reverse of the coin bears the grizzly bear (Xhuwaji) motif depicted in Bill Reid's original Haida style.
The image of Xhuwaji was created to decorate the ceremonial drum of a small community inhabiting the island settlement of Ahousat. Later, the motif was reworked by the artist and used for a charity silkscreen issue.
Canadian artist William Ronald Reid (1920 - 1998), known in the Haida language as Iljuwas, was instrumental in promoting First Nations culture worldwide through his work. The sculptor, painter and jeweller used the style and themes characteristic of the Haida Indian ethnic group inhabiting the North American coastline in the British Columbia area. The Haida fishing tribe excelled in the art of carving, which they applied to the production of large carved canoes as well as totem poles. The totem decorations depicted scenes, creatures and revered animals from mythology, including the raven or raven, bear, killer whale, bald eagle and beaver.
The Royal Canadian Mint has used Bill Reid's work for several of its coins in the past. His sculptural work is also featured on the Canadian Journey series $20 bill.
The obverse features a traditional portrait of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "D.G. REGINA", "CANADA", the year of issue, the artist's initials "SB" and the denomination "20 DOLLARS".
