"Seven Wonders of the Ancient World" series - Zeus of Pheidias at Olympia
A precision gold coin of Feida's Zeus in Olympia issued in 2009 by Solomon Islands as part of the "Seven Wonders of ohe Ancient World" series.
The reverse of the coin depicts a statue of the supreme Greek god Zeus seated on the throne of the temple at Olympia. In his left hand he holds a crutch with an eagle on top and in his right hand a statue of the goddess Nike. The scene is accompanied by the inscriptions 'STATUE OF ZEUS AT OLYMPIA', 'SEVEN WONDERS OF THE ANCIENT WORLD' and the denomination '10$'. The statue of Zeus at Olympia was a monumental statue, about 13 metres high, made of gold, ivory and ebony and decorated with diamonds. It was created in 433 BC by the famous Greek sculptor Feidias. The statue was in the Temple of Zeus in Olympia until 394 AD, when it was moved to Constantinople, where it was probably destroyed by fire in 475. The obverse traditionally depicts Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Queen Elizabeth II with the inscriptions 'ELIZABETH II', 'SOLOMON INSLANDS' and the year of issue '2009'.
The coin comes in a plastic capsule in a limited edition of only 7,500 pieces worldwide!
