Detailed description

Important notice
On 27 October 2023, the CNB issued a press release regarding the adjustment of the 2025 issue plan. It announced that the planned issue of commercial coins in denominations of 1, 2, 5 and 10 ducats to commemorate the 700th anniversary of the first Czech gold coins minted by John of Luxembourg will not take place in 2025.

Trade coins Dvoudukat - The opening of the minting of the first Czech gold coins by John of Luxembourg

The first gold coins minted in Bohemia were florins. Bohemia was also the first country north of the Alps to mint gold currency. It was minted in 1325 during the reign of John of Luxembourg, who was developing international trade and for him having his own strong currency was a prestigious matter.
The inspiration for the motif and the name came from Florence. The Italian city was a thriving centre of trade and finance and its coins, with a tradition dating back to 1252, were very popular throughout Europe. Therefore, the first Czech florins almost copied the Florentine design. The obverse side depicted St. John the Baptist and a small Bohemian lion, the reverse side bore a heraldic lily and the name of the Bohemian king "JOHANNES REX BOEMIE" in the description.

Weighing approximately 3.53 grams, 20 mm in diameter and with a purity of 990/1000, the coins were of above-average quality in their time. The gold came from the mining deposits in Jílové near Prague and had limited resources. Therefore, it was not possible to increase the number of coins minted and the Czech florins played a rather representative role in international trade.
It was the high quality and low mintage of the coins that caused their gradual disappearance from circulation. Czech florins were stored abroad and then often melted down.

Charles IV followed up the first issue of Czech gold coins with the minting of the so-called "royal ducats" and then "imperial ducats".
