Detailed description

King Charles III. - Coronation

The unique gold coin with embedded emerald, issued by the State of Niue for 2023 in purity of the purest 99.99% gold, weighing 31.1 g (1 oz) in top Proof quality, uses the significance of royal portraits to symbolically link the past and future of the monarchy on the occasion of the coronation of Charles III.

The reverse of the coin carries the portrait of Charles III from the coronation ceremony at Westminster Abbey. The King, wearing an ermine cloak and St. Edward's crown, holds a sceptre in his right hand and a royal apple in his left. A genuine emerald is set in the cross at the top of the coronation apple. In the background, the gothic lines of St Edward's coronation throne can be seen, on which, according to tradition, the new monarch receives the coronation regalia. The motif is complemented by the inscriptions ''KING CHARLES III.'', ''2023 CORONATION''.

The ceremonial coronation of the monarch has a thousand-year tradition in the British monarchy. During this ceremony, the sovereign is presented with the coronation insignia, symbols of royal power and the country's politics. The most important jewel is the Crown of St Edward, which is used exclusively for the coronation ceremony itself. It was made in 1661 based on descriptions of the original crown of Edward III. Confessor. The original crown, along with other crown jewels as symbols of the monarchy's rule, was melted down and sold off during the British Civil War. The present crown of incalculable value is set with 275 gems and weighs over two kilograms. After the coronation, it is kept and the monarch receives the Crown of the British Empire, which is part of the traditions of royal functions. The crown bears 273 pearls, 2,868 diamonds, 17 sapphires, 11 emeralds and 6 rubies. In the centre of the crown is a 170 carat Black Prince ruby of incalculable value. Directly below it is the ''Second Star of Africa'', one of the two largest diamonds in the world. The Royal Sceptres (Sceptre with Cross, Sceptre with Dove) are one cubit long sticks of precious metal, decorated with precious stones. The Sceptre of the Cross contains the Cullinan, the ''First Star of Africa'', the largest diamond in the world. The Royal Apple, the spherical crown jewel, symbolizes the world and the cross above it the reign of Jesus Christ. Other parts of the jewels include swords, spurs, rings and the royal mantle, among others. This ''coat of kings'' is lined all around with ermine and is usually about two metres long.
After the ceremony, all these regalia are stored in the Tower of London, where they have been kept safe since the 17th century by ceremonial guards, known as 'Beefeaters'. Retired elite soldiers who have been closing the fortress in exactly the same way every day for 700 years.

The obverse of the coin bears the portrait of the late Elizabeth II at the time of her coronation. Above the head are the inscriptions ''QUEEN ELIZABETH II'', ''1953 CORONATION''. The motif of St Edward's throne in the background links the two portraits of the monarchs generationally. Below in the foreground is the Niue national emblem in a circle, flanked by the weight and purity of the metal, the face value of the coin and the year of mintage.

The coin comes in a deluxe box along with a certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 150 pieces for the whole world!
