Detailed description
Australian Bird of Paradise
Perth Mint investment coins are among the most popular investment coins in the world. In 2018, the Perth Mint decided to include its next investment coin in the bullion market, a 1 ounce (31.1 g) coin made of the purest 99.99% gold, dedicated to the bird of paradise, a bird that lives in the tropical regions of New Guinea, part of the Australian continent.
The obverse of the coin traditionally depicts a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadly and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the issue and denomination details. The coin has the status of Australian legal tender.
The reverse of the gold investment coin depicts a male stingray performing a characteristic dance to attract a female. The motif is surrounded by the inscription "AUSTRALIAN BIRD OF PARADISE" and details of weight, fineness and the Perth Mint's initial "P". The songbirds of the paradise family are native to New Guinea and include 43 subspecies. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, skates were hunted en masse for their feathers, which became a fashionable accessory for ladies' hats in Europe. The name stingray is derived from the appearance of the feathers, which were said to come from paradise. Due to a drastic decline in the population of the skate, hunting was banned in 1924.
