Detailed description

1/2 Oz Gold Coin - Renaissance Bridge in Stříbro

On the obverse side of the coin is a composition of heraldic animals from the great state emblem and the emblem of the town of Stříbro in Renaissance form from the bridge tower. The background is filled with the decoration of the bridge gate. The name of the state, the denomination of the coin and the name of the cycle "BRIDGES" are in the plate above the emblem. The Czech Mint mark is at the lower edge of the coin.

On the reverse side of the coin there is a general view of the bridge with the characteristic tower and the historical image of the sculpture of St. John of Nepomuk. The description includes the name of the bridge, the year of mintage and the initials ZF of the author of the coin's design, academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů.

In the past, the town of Stříbro had fortifications and the road to the town led over the embankment three-arch bridge to the bridge gate and to the bridge decorated with a sculpture.Nowadays, the repaired bridge is in use for local passenger traffic and a cycle path runs along it.

The three-arch bridge is relatively low and allowed water to flow when the level of the Mže River rose. The large stone bridge has two arches and is still decorated with sculpture. Drainage troughs run through the parapet, see photo. The bridge is less than 6 metres wide and the total length of both bridges is 60 metres. The arches are semi-circular made of hewn blocks and bricks. The parapet of the bridge is 5 metres above the water level. The gate stands on a 5.15 metre wide guide pillar. The tower floor of the gate has a hexagonal tent roof covered with yarns. The bridge was built by Benedikt Volch between 1555 and 1560.
