Detailed description
1/2 Oz gold coin - Marian Bridge in Ústí nad Labem
The obverse side of the coin depicts a composition of heraldic animals from the large state emblem. In the centre is the Czech lion, to the left of it is the Moravian eagle and to the right of it is the Silesian eagle. Below the composition of the heraldic animals is a part of the bridge structure of the Mariánský Bridge and at the left edge of the coin is a part of the Mariánská Rock. Below the Moravian eagle is the denomination of the coin with the abbreviation of the monetary unit "5000 CZK", which partly interferes with the representation of the Marian Rock. The name of the state "CZECH REPUBLIC" is at the upper edge of the coin. Below the depiction of the bridge structure is the name of the cycle "BRIDGES". The mark of the Czech Mint, which consists of a composition of the letters "Č" and "M", is at the bottom edge of the coin. The Mariánský Bridge is the youngest of the three bridges over the Elbe River in Ústí nad Labem. It connects the districts of Ústí nad Labem-City and Ústí nad Labem-Střekov. It is intended for car traffic, cyclists and pedestrians. It was opened in 1998.
On the reverse side of the coin there is a depiction of a part of the bridge structure, which is connected to the depiction on the obverse side of the coin. The text "MARIÁNSKÝ MOST V ÚSTÍ NAD LABEM" is on the periphery of the coin in an unsealed description. To the left of the word 'ÚSTÍ' is the year of mintage '2015'. Above the letter "N" from the word "NAD" is the initial of the author Vojtěch Dostál, which is formed by the inverted letter D.
Next to the Dr. E. Beneš Bridge and the railway bridge, the Mariánský Bridge is the third link between the two banks in Ústí nad Labem. It forms a counterbalance to the Mariánská Rock in the place called Ústí Gate. Next to the traditional symbol of the city, the Střekov Castle, it has become a modern landmark of Ústí nad Labem. The author of the design is architect Roman Koucký. The bridge won the 1999 European Steel Design Award of the European Convention for Constructional Steelwork (ECCS). In 2002, it successfully withstood a devastating flood of great magnitude.
Bridge construction
The bridge consists of two pylons, each with 15 cables coming out of one side to carry the bridge deck. The bridge is 179 metres long and the pylons are 60 metres high. Their height is supposed to be the same as the height of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Ústí nad Labem. The bridge weighs 3,500 tonnes. The bridge is partly made of steel and partly of reinforced concrete.
