Detailed description

1/4 Oz gold coin - Cultural monuments of technical heritage - Water Mill in Slupi

The obverse side of the coin features the facade of the Slupi Water Mill and stylized heraldic animals from the Great State Emblem. At the left, bottom Water Mill in Slupi gold coin and the right edge of the coin is the title of the cycle "CULTURAL MONUMENTS OF TECHNICAL HERITAGE". Below the facade of the water mill there is the name of the state "CZECH REPUBLIC" and the denomination with the abbreviation of the monetary unit "2500 CZK". The mark of the Czech Mint is placed at the bottom edge of the coin between the denomination and the second word of the cycle name.

On the reverse side of the coin is a set of four mill wheels and above it the contemporary emblem of the water mill in Slupi. At the left, upper and right edge of the coin there is an unsealed inscription 'VODNÍ MLÝN VE SLUPI' and the year '2007'. The coin was designed by the academic sculptor Zbyněk Fojtů. His initials, the connected letters "FZ", are placed under the period emblem of the water mill in Slupi.

The first record of a miller in Slupi, and thus of the undoubted existence of the mill, dates back to 1512. It is the charter of the local milling fraternity. However, the mill probably stood here earlier, as the Krhovice-Jaroslavice dam, whose waters are used by the mill, is mentioned in a document from 1302. The builder and owner of the mill was the Cistercian convent in Oslavany, which became the owner of the village of Slup in 1228. Vodní mlýn ve Slupi

After the dissolution of the monastery in the first third of the 16th century, the village and the mill were taken over by the owners of the Jaroslavice estate. Between 1541 and 1810, these were the Lords of Kunštát, the Lords of Krajíř, the Lords of Hardeka, the Lords of Collalto and the Berks of Dubá. For the longest time the Jaroslavice manor was held by the Counts of Althan (1609-1790). The mill was probably rebuilt in its present late Renaissance form in the last quarter of the 16th century or at the very beginning of the following century.

In the years between the wars, a water turbine was installed in place of the mill wheels. Before the Second World War, the mill fell into German hands and was therefore confiscated in 1945 and administered by the national administrator. He only offered it to an agricultural cooperative, which used the mill for milling until 1951 and for grain crushing until 1957. During this period, neglect of maintenance led to the destruction of the building and the dismantling of the equipment. In 1970 the mill was acquired by the Czechoslovak state and six years later it was taken over by the Technical Museum in Brno as a cultural monument. With the help of other institutions and individuals, the museum built and opened an exhibition of milling technology in 1983. In 1995, the Slupsko Mill became a national cultural monument.
