This exclusive High Relief gold coin, issued by the Perth Mint in 2015 in a premium proof quality of the purest 99.99% gold and weighing 2 Oz (62.215g), is dedicated to the wedge-tailed eagle, Australia's largest raptor and one of the largest eagle species ever, growing to an average length of 1.2m with a wingspan of up to 2.5m. It is predominantly dark brown throughout and its distinctive feature is its wedge-shaped tail.
The coin depicts on its reverse a beautiful motif of a flying eagle perched on a tree branch, designed by the U.S. Mint's leading sculptor and engraver, John M Mercanti. The motif is surrounded by the inscriptions "AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE", "1oz 9999", "GOLD", the year of issue and the Perth Mint's "P" mint mark. The obverse traditionally features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "AUSTRALIA" and the denomination.
