Detailed description
Special Mintage - 1 Oz Gold Coin - Jan Hus
On the reverse side of the coin is a stylized depiction of the figure of Master Jan Hus. To the left of the figure is the text "MISTR JAN HUS" and to the right the years "1415 - 2015". The depiction of the figure and the texts together form a stylized cross. To the right of the year "2015" is the initial of the author of the coin's design, Jakub Orava, which is formed by the letter "O" in a frame.
On the obverse side of the coin there is a cross motif. At the top of the coin is a composition of heraldic animals from the great state emblem placed in shields - in the middle is the Czech lion, to the right of it is the Silesian eagle and to the left of it is the Moravian eagle. The Czech lion is placed at the top of the cross. Inside the cross is the name of the state 'CZECH REPUBLIC' and the denomination of the coin with the abbreviation of the monetary unit '10 000 CZK'. To the right and left of the cross is a transcription of one of the sermons of Master Jan Hus. The mark of the Czech Mint, which consists of the letters 'Č' and 'M', is at the bottom edge of the coin.
Jan Hus
Master Jan Hus (c. 1369/1370 Husinec - 6 July 1415 Kostnice) was a Roman Catholic priest, Czech medieval religious thinker, reformer and preacher; master and rector (1409-1410) of Prague University. He is most likely also the author of the spelling reform which removed the hyphens and introduced the diacritical alphabet into the Czech alphabet. In his religious writings he criticized the moral decline of the Catholic Church and adopted some of the ideas of John Wycliffe. The Catholic Church labeled him a heretic and his teachings as heresy and excommunicated him (1411). He was condemned as a heretic at the Council of Constance and handed over to the secular authorities to be burned at the stake when he refused to recant his teachings. In 1999, Pope John Paul II declared that he regretted the cruel death of Jan Hus and recognized him as a reformer of the Church. Some of Hus's views (for example, that a priest in sin invalidly administers the sacraments) are still seen as theologically flawed by the Catholic Church today.
The date of his burning became a Czech national holiday. His legacy was claimed by the Hussites and later by other churches and societies that emerged from the Reformation. The Orthodox Church (along with St. Jerome of Prague) already venerates him as its holy martyr (according to a proclamation by Metropolitan Christopher, Archbishop of Prague).
