Jan Hus

Master Jan Hus (c. 1369/1370 Husinec - 6 July 1415 Kostnice) was a Roman Catholic priest, Czech medieval religious thinker, reformer and preacher; master and rector (1409-1410) of the University of Prague.r.2015 Jan Hus Zlatá pamětní mince 1oz He is most likely also the author of the spelling reform which removed the hyphens and introduced the diacritical alphabet into the Czech alphabet. In his religious writings he criticized the moral decline of the Catholic Church and adopted some of the ideas of John Wycliffe. The Catholic Church labeled him a heretic and his teachings as heresy and excommunicated him (1411). He was condemned as a heretic at the Council of Constance and handed over to the secular authorities to be burned at the stake when he refused to recant his teachings. In 1999, Pope John Paul II declared that he regretted the cruel death of Jan Hus and recognized him as a reformer of the Church. Some of Hus's views (for example, that a priest in sin invalidly administers the sacraments) are still seen as theologically flawed by the Catholic Church today.

The date of his burning became a Czech national holiday. His legacy was claimed by the Hussites and later by other churches and societies that emerged from the Reformation. The Orthodox Church (along with St. Jerome of Prague) already venerates him as its holy martyr (according to a proclamation by Metropolitan Christopher, Archbishop of Prague).
