OZNAMENI_CESKA_MINCOVNAThe celebration of the 700th anniversary of the birth of Charles IV is not over! We present to you an extraordinary issue of a gold coin weighing two troy ounces, which is dedicated not only to the greatest of Czechs, but also to his father, John of Luxembourg - because 2016 will mark 720 years since his birth and 670 years since his knightly death.
The mintage is part of a free cycle of coins depicting great historical couples. So far, they have featured the reformers Master Jan Hus and John Wycliff and the acting duo Jiří Voskovec and Jan Werich. Now come two medieval monarchs who, at first glance, could not be more different. While Charles IV earned the affectionate title Father of the Fatherland, John of Luxembourg is unflatteringly remembered as the King of the Foreigners. In reality, however, our history is somewhat unfair to John - after all, he is known in the world as John of Bohemia and, after all, he is credited with the legendary sentence he uttered when he rode out to meet certain death at the Battle of Krescak: "It will not do for a Czech king to run away from battle!"
The Father of the Fatherland did not have it easy. He became ruler when he was only 14, inherited debts and a rebellious country, and his wife was the self-confident Eliška Přemyslovna, who tried to restore the government in the spirit of the Přemyslid dynasty. Charles IV, born Wenceslas, was their third child. Although the relationship between the noble father and son was not ideal, they never stood against each other with sword in hand. On the contrary. John worked hard to ensure that his son gained influence and could be elected Roman Emperor, and Charles always stood by him faithfully - he was there when John went blind and went into his last battle with his father.
The two great men also stand side by side on the reverse of the gold coin - the crowned busts are accompanied by their names. "Historical themes are closest to me and I like to create portraits of Czech rulers," says the author of the coin's design, Jan Lukáš, a leading Czech academic sculptor who was at the birth of the Jablonec school of medal design. "I tried to make Jan Lucemburský a bit more of a rabbi," he adds with a laugh. The obverse of the coin is then devoted to the necessary attributes of the issuer, the denomination of 100 DOLLARS, the year of issue 2016 and a subtle gothic ornament.
The two-ounce coin is issued in a limited edition of only 200 pieces!
