Issued by the Cook Islands Treasury in 2008, the Thomas W. Lawson silver coin is struck in the finest proof quality silver and weighs an incredible 100 ounces or 3,110 grams. This exclusive coin comes from a series of six coins (Tall Ships of the 20th century) dedicated to the most famous sailing ships of the 20th century.
The following coins were issued in the 20th Century Sailing Ships series: the Norwegian - Christian Radich, the German - Preussen - Carl Laeisz, the German/Russian - Kruzenshtern - Adam Johann von Krusenstern, the Russian - Sedov - Georgyi Sedov, the American - Thomas W. Lawson and the French - France II - Victor Lagniel.
The reverse of the coin depicts the world's largest schooner Thomas W. Lawson, which was built in the USA in 1902 as a seven-masted schooner. The famous sailing ship is accompanied by a portrait of the ship's owner. The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the face value.
The coin is housed in a thick plastic capsule that can be unscrewed and comes in a luxurious, brown wooden lockable chest along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 400 pieces for the entire world!!! The coin also includes two illustrated booklets in English and Russian describing each individual sailing ship in the series.
The ship Thomas W. Lawson was named after the eponymous owner who was a famous Boston millionaire, stockholder, book author and president of the Boston "Bay State Gas Co".
