Issued by the Cook Islands Treasury in 2008, the Sedov silver coin is minted in the finest proof quality silver and weighs an incredible 100 ounces or 3,110 grams. This exclusive coin comes from a series of six coins (Tall Ships of the 20th century) dedicated to the most famous sailing ships of the 20th century.
The following coins were issued in the 20th Century Sailing Ships series: the Norwegian - Christian Radich, the German - Preussen - Carl Laeisz, the German/Russian - Kruzenshtern - Adam Johann von Krusenstern, the Russian - Sedov - Georgyi Sedov, the American - Thomas W. Lawson and the French - France II - Victor Lagniel.
The coin shows on its reverse STS Sedov, formerly Magdalene Vinnen II (1921-1936) and Kommodore Johnsen (-1945), a four-masted ship originally built as a cargo ship at the Friedrich Krupp Germaniawerft shipyard in Kiel, Germany. In 1945 she was handed over to the USSR for war reparations and was renamed in memory of the polar explorer - Georgiy Sedov. It is his portrait that completes the motif of this famous sailing ship. The sailing ship Sedov is now used as a training ship for training cadets from Murmansk, St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk universities. The obverse displays a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the face value.
The coin is housed in a thick plastic capsule that can be unscrewed and comes in a luxurious brown wooden lockable chest, complete with a numbered certificate of authenticity, in a limited edition of only 400 pieces for the whole world!!! The coin also includes two illustrated booklets in English and Russian describing each individual sailing ship in the series.
