The Kruzenstern Silver Coin was issued by the Cook Islands Treasury in 2008 in the finest purity of silver in top proof quality, weighing an incredible 100 ounces or 3,110 grams. This exclusive coin comes from a series of six coins (Tall Ships of the 20th century) dedicated to the most famous sailing ships of the 20th century.
The following coins were issued in the 20th Century Sailing Ships series: the Norwegian - Christian Radich, the German - Preussen - Carl Laeisz, the German/Russian - Kruzenshtern - Adam Johann von Krusenstern, the Russian - Sedov - Georgyi Sedov, the American - Thomas W. Lawson and the French - France II - Victor Lagniel.
The reverse of the coin shows the schooner Kruzenshtern (also called Krusenstern), which was built in 1926 as a four-masted schooner in the village of Geestemünde in the port city of Bremerhaven, Germany, originally named Padua (named after the Italian city). In 1946 it was handed over to the USSR for war reparations. In the early 19th century it was renamed after a German admiral in Russian service - Adam Johann Krusenstern (1770-1846). It is his portrait that completes the motif of this famous sailing ship. The sailing ship Krusenstern is now used as a training ship for the Russian Navy. The obverse shows the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the face value.
The coin is housed in a thick plastic capsule that can be unscrewed and comes in a luxurious, brown wooden lockable chest along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 400 pieces for the entire world!!! The coin also includes two illustrated booklets in English and Russian describing each individual sailing ship in the series.
