Discover Australia 2011 Exclusive Set - Last set in the series
A beautiful set of five coloured silver coins struck at the Perth Mint in top proof quality from the purest 99.9% silver weighing 1 oz. Discover Australia is dedicated to the Australian fauna.
Discover Australia through Aboriginal art, which can be admired on the coins for the third year on the final set in this series! The reverse of the coin depicts representatives of Australian fauna in colourful Aboriginal art style: the dingo, emu, white shark, kookaburra kingfisher and Tasmanian devil.
The silver coins are issued as legal tender in a deluxe gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 10,000 pieces for the entire world.
Australia - Fauna and Flora
Although the vast majority of Australia's surface is desert or semi-desert in nature, it has developed many different environments from alpine heathland to tropical rainforest. The long geographical separation has meant that many Australian organisms are quite unique. 85% of plants, 84% of mammals, over 45% of birds and 89% percent of inshore fish are endemic. Many Australian ecoregions and their species are affected by human activity and human introduced animals or plants. There are 64 wetlands registered under the Ramsar Convention and 16 sites are registered as World Heritage Sites.
Many of Australia's tree species are evergreen, many adapted to resist fire or drought. Examples of these plants include eucalypts and acacia. Australia is rich in endemic legume species that thrive in nutrient-poor soils due to their symbiosis with rhizobia and mycorrhizal fungi. Australia's best-known fauna includes bird-eaters (ptarmigan and hedgehogs), a large number of marsupials including kangaroos, koalas and wombats, and birds (e.g. emus, kingfishers). The dingo was introduced to Australia by Austronesians trading with the indigenous people around 4000 BC. Many plants and animals became extinct soon after human settlement began, and many others became extinct after the arrival of Europeans (for example, the wakwolf).
