Coral Reef Series - Eilat

An exclusive set of two silver coins and one gold coin, issued by the Bank of Israel in 2012 and minted by The Holy Land Mint in top proof quality in the new "Coral Reef" series, is dedicated to the southern Gulf of Eilat.

All the coins depict on their reverse the coral reef motif with a fish and a dolphin against the backdrop of a sea wave. The motif is accompanied by the inscriptions "CORAL REEF - EILAT" in English/Hebrew/Arabic. The obverse shows the face value around which the fish is swimming, the national emblem of Israel is placed at the top. This is followed by the inscription "ISRAEL" in English/Hebrew/Arabic and the year of issue.

Gulf of Aqaba

The Gulf of Aqaba or Gulf of Aqaba (also Gulf of Eilat) is one of the larger gulfs of the Red Sea, with which it is connected by the Strait of Tiran. It is located between the Sinai and Arabian Peninsulas. Its coastline borders the states of Egypt, Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.coral_reef_eilat

The Gulf of Aqaba is one of the two gulfs created by the Sinai Peninsula. On the western side of this peninsula lies the Gulf of Suez. The Gulf of Aqaba measures 24 km at its widest point and stretches from the north for 160 km to where the Egyptian border meets the Jordanian border. There are three important cities in the northernmost part of the Gulf: Taba in Egypt, Eilat in Israel and Aqaba in Jordan. All three cities are strategically important trading ports and also popular tourist destinations.

The Gulf of Aqaba, like the coastal waters of the Red Sea, is one of the world's most sought-after diving areas. The area is particularly rich in coral reefs and other marine biodiversity, and it is also possible to discover many shipwrecks.

Geographically, the Gulf of Aqaba is part of the Great Rift Valley, which runs from East Africa and continues north across the Red Sea to the Dead Sea via the Wadi al-Araba.
