650 years since the laying of the foundation stone of the Charles Bridge

The foundation stone for the bridge was laid by Charles IV on 9 July 1357 at 5 hours 31 minutes. The date and time were not chosen by chance. People at that time were very superstitious and there was a favourable constellation of stars on that day. According to astrologers, the conjunction of the Sun with Saturn was the most appropriate and fortunate moment of the year for such a feat.

According to another interpretation, the date corresponded to a sequence of odd numbers from one to nine and back - 1 3 5 7 (year) 9 (day) 7 (month) 5 3 1 (time). The bridge of it was supposed to be much higher and more magnificent. Charles IV commissioned Peter Parléř, the builder of St. Vitus Cathedral at Prague Castle, to build it. He came from Swabian Gmünd and was 27 years old at the time of the start of the construction. However, like Charles IV, he did not live to see the end of the construction. He died in 1399 and the bridge was completed in 1402. But already in 1378 a funeral procession accompanied Charles IV on his last journey to Prague Cathedral.

The bridge was enclosed in entrance gates with towers, of which the Old Town Bridge Tower is also the work of Petr Parléř, while the Lesser Town Bridge Towers each date from a different period. Thus, a unique architectural masterpiece was completed, which even after centuries deserves admiration.
