When the Mint began minting coins in 1908 (subsequently known as the Royal Mint of Ottawa), the one-dollar coin was not yet in circulation but was desperately needed, so in 1911 the Mint struck a trial lead one-dollar while the Royal Mint of London struck two trial coins in silver.
As England was responsible for the preparation and distribution of most of the coins to its colonies, the engravers were under real pressure and the coronation of King George V made the situation even more difficult. In their haste, they made the mistake of forgetting to include the inscription around the portrait "Dei Gra(tia)", ("With the Grace of God," in Latin) - the error appeared on smaller denomination coins that went into circulation and became known as "godless coins".
A series of extraordinary events and changes in government delayed the release of the new dollar until 1935 when a new silver dollar design called the Voyageur was released, elevating the original 1911 silver dollar to the status of one of Canada's most valuable coins.
