Britannia - The Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III 2023
The Britannia gold investment coin, minted by The Royal Mint in 1 Oz purity of the purest 99.99% gold in 2023, was issued in a limited edition to mark the coronation of Charles III.
The reverse side features the traditional motif of the female personification of Britain. It depicts the warrior goddess in flowing robes and Corinthian helmet atop a cliff to embody the nation's unwavering pride. The trident in her right hand symbolizes naval history. In her other hand she holds an olive branch as a symbol of peace and a shield for protection. Since its launch, the unified basis of Britannia coins has been the dulcimer flanking the circle as a symbol of the country's unity. The rim of the coin bears the inscription 'BRITANNIA', the year of issue '2023' and details of the purity and weight of the metal.
The obverse bears the first coin portrait of Charles III in a version designed specifically for the series of commemorative coins marking his coronation. The portrait of the King, created by British sculptor Martin Jennigs, is accompanied by a Tudor crown. The description of the coin states "CHARLES III - D - G - REX - F - D", the face value and the year of issue "2023". The initials of the designer 'MJ' are included.
The issue was announced by the Mint on 29 June 2023 in a limited edition of 10,000 pieces for the whole world.
