Detailed description
100th Anniversary of Bluenose
Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2021, this unique gold coin, minted in the finest 99.99% pure gold and weighing 7.8 grams in Proof quality, is being released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the launch of the legendary schooner Bluenose.
The reverse of the coin features a combination of two images of the design of the schooner that gave Bluenose the gift of speed as well as elegance and majesty. The spectacular contrast is achieved through the interplay of different finishes and engraving techniques.
The background drawing focuses on the construction and clean lines behind the achievements of the fishing and racing champion. In the foreground, Bluenose is depicted without sails or rigging, merely festooned with a series of signal flags. This image is based on the famous photographs of the launching ceremony on 26 March 1921. The forced perspective emphasises the line of the bow and creates the illusion of movement. The motif is completed by the inscription "CANADA", the year of issue "2021" and the denomination "100 DOLLARS".
The Bluenose was a fishing and racing schooner, built to a design by shipbuilder William James Roué in Nova Scotia. She embarked on her maiden fishing voyage on April 15, 1921. The wooden schooner was designed with her planned participation in prestigious fishing regattas held outside the fishing season in mind. Under Captain Angus Walters, she won the International Trophy in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1931 and 1938. At the same time, he held the record for the largest catch of fish transported to his home port of Lunenburg.
The name Bluenose comes from the nickname for Nova Scotia, which took hold in the late 18th century. Due to his achievements, he was also referred to as the "Queen of the North Atlantic".
After the outbreak of World War II, she was sold due to her vulnerability and began serving as a merchant ship in the militarily quiet Caribbean Sea. Yet it was in these waters that she found her doom in 1946. Off Haiti, it was severely damaged after hitting a coral reef and abandoned by its crew. A search for its remains failed to identify it reliably among the many other wrecks in the risk area.
The pride of Canadians in the glory of the schooner Bluenose is repeatedly commemorated on circulating and commemorative coins, postage stamps and Nova Scotia license plates. In 1955, the iconic schooner and her captain were inducted into the Canadian Sport Hall of Fame. This was the first time this honour was not bestowed on a person.
The obverse features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt with the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II" and "D.G.REGINA".
The coin comes in a leatherette gift box along with a numbered certificate of authenticity, limited to only 2,000 pieces for the entire world!
