BIG FIVE Series - The World's Largest Silver Ounces!

Following the huge success of the BIG FIVE - Africa silver set, dedicated to Africa's most famous animals and issued in 2010 by Rwanda for the first time ever as the world's largest silver coins, weighing 1 ounce and measuring an incredible 65mm in diameter, the Cook Islands are releasing a second set of these unique coins for 2011, this time dedicated to the five continents of the world: Africa, Europe, Australia, Asia and the Americas. The third set released in 2012 is BIG FIVE - Ancient Civilizations.

The coins depict the most famous architectural, landscape and animal motifs associated with the continent. Above the portrait is the name of the set, below it the fineness, the weight with the word "BIG", the face value and in the middle the name of the continent. The obverse shows a traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley and the inscriptions "ELIZABETH II", "COOK ISLANDS" and the year of issue.

These beautiful silver coins come in a truly large, wooden case along with a certificate of authenticity in a limited edition of only 3,000 pieces for the entire world!

Africa

Africa is the third largest continent after Asia and the Americas, with a total area of over 30,500,000 square kilometres, representing 20.3% of the total land surface of the Earth. It extends south and north of the equator for the most part in the eastern hemisphere. It is largely surrounded by oceans, the Indian Ocean to the east and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. To the north is the Mediterranean Sea, which separates Africa from Europe. Africa is connected to the Eurasian Plate in the Suez Neck region.

Europe

Europe is the territory taken either as one of the six continents in their traditional conceptions or as the western part of Eurasia. It is bounded to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the west by the Atlantic Ocean, to the south by the Mediterranean and Black Seas with their connecting waterways, and to the east by Asia (there is no consensus on the exact course of this part of the border).

It is the second smallest continent, covering an area of about 10 180 000 km2 (about 7% of the Earth's surface), but is also the second most densely populated (about 72 inhabitants/km2), so that Europe's 718 000 000 inhabitants represent about 9.6% of the world's population (2009 figures).

Australia

Australia is the continent with the smallest land area and the lowest average altitude. Although the state of Australia occupies most of the continent, often erroneously stated as the whole, its borders are defined by a continental plateau that covers 2.5 million km? including the Arafura Sea, the Coral Sea and the Great Barrier Reef, with a depth of around 50 m. This sea is one of the most important marine ecosystems and a protected habitat for 1500 species of fish, 4000 species of molluscs and 400 species of corals.

Asia

With an area of 44,603,853 square kilometres, Asia is the largest and most populous continent with nearly 4 billion inhabitants, forming part of the continent known as Eurasia or Eurasia. It is mainly located in the eastern and northern hemispheres. It covers 8.6 % of the Earth's surface (29.9 % of the land) and its population represents 60 % of the world's population. During the 20th century, the number of people living in Asia almost quadrupled.

America

America is the second largest continent and one of the Earth's six continents; it is the only continent whose entire territory lies in the Western Hemisphere, while also (like Africa) spanning both the southern and northern hemispheres. The traditional date of the discovery of the Americas by Europeans is 1492, when a fleet led by Christopher Columbus arrived on the shores of this continent under Spanish flags. However, it is very likely that the Vikings were the first to set foot on American soil from Europe, several hundred years earlier.
