Judea Biblical Holy Land - Historical Coin Set

A unique collection of 12 Judean coins from the time of Jesus Christ! At the time of Jesus, a wide variety of ancient coins were put into circulation in the Holy Land. The imagery on the bronze Hasmonean coins was commonly borrowed from earlier coins of Ptolemaic Egypt and Seleucid Syria: the olive wreath, abundance, flower, anchor, star, and palm branch. The inscriptions on these coins are mostly in Aramaic and Greek. As Rome gained more and more influence, it applied its own names to the kings of Judah, but also kept to the original motifs.

Concurrent with the life of Jesus and the Herodian dynasty, other coins were minted in Judea by Roman governors. These coins do not bear their names, but rather the initials of the Roman emperor or members of his family, and are dated with the years of the governor. Although the weights of these various coins vary considerably, the two most common types of Judean bronzes during this period were the smaller leptons and the larger prutahs. The bronze coins of Peter were struck by the neighboring nomadic merchants of Nabatea and were freely accepted in the Judean shops and bazaars.

These coins were handmade by casting metal into molds consisting of shallow, round sockets connected by channels. Each clean coin was joined by a thin strip of metal. The coins were struck with a hammer and a button, then the strip was pulled and another coin was struck. The finished coins were then cut apart.

The coins are housed in a deluxe wooden case along with a certificate of authenticity.

The set includes the following coins:

Judea or Judaea

Provincie_Judea_1AD

The province of Judea (Latin Iudae) was a Roman province that existed from 6-132 AD. Its core was Judea and Samaria, but later other parts of Herod's kingdom were incorporated into it. The province fell under direct Roman administration.

The Roman administrators, however, were insensitive to Jewish religious sentiments, and many of them were incompetent, so that there was a growing dissatisfaction among the inhabitants with Roman rule. Then, when Gessius Florus plundered the temple treasury in 66, the first Jewish war broke out. The rebels, however, were split into several opposing factions, so that when the Roman army led by Vespasian and Titus conquered Galilee and laid siege to Jerusalem, civil war broke out in that city. In 70 AD, Jerusalem was finally conquered and razed, along with the Temple. In 74, the resistance of the last rebels was broken.

The destruction of the Temples had serious consequences for the Jewish religion, as Jews lost their place of worship. Torah study became central to the emerging rabbinic Judaism. The Palestinian biblical canon was established in the Yavneh and began to shape the material that was later compiled in the Mishnah.
