Detailed description
Queen Elizabeth II. - The end of an Era - 5 Oz
Issued by the Republic of Cameroon for 2022, this unique 5 Oz (155.5 g) gold coin, struck in the finest 99.99% Proof gold, is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth II and a symbolic reminder of the end of an era in the long history of the British monarchy.
The reverse side of the coin bears in its centre the Royal Arms of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland in the version used by the government during the reign of Elizabeth II from 1952 to 2022. The years of the Queen's birth and death, "1926 - 2022", are shown below. The inscription on the inner border gives the name 'ELIZABETH II' and her title 'QUEEN OF THE UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHERN IRELAND'. The rim of the coin shows medallions with 12 coin portraits of the monarchs of the Kingdom of Great Britain, which was formed by the unification of England and Scotland in 1707, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 1801 and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland from 1927. The portraits are based on historical mintages which, due to their purpose as a means of payment, were known to every citizen of the British Empire, regardless of their social status or background.
The gallery is symbolically introduced at the top by the first and last coin portraits of Elizabeth II. Clockwise, they are followed in a line of succession, beginning in 1707, by Anne Stuart, George I, George II, George III, George IV, William IV, Victoria of the Hanoverian dynasty, Edward VII of the Saxe-Coburg-Gotha dynasty, and George V, Edward VIII and George VI (represented by one joint portrait) of the Windsor dynasty. The individual portraits are separated by a heraldic representation of the Tudor crown. A sophisticated geometric pattern forms the background of the circle.
Queen Elizabeth II was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of the House of Windsor in London on 21 April 1926. She became Queen at the age of just 25 after the sudden death of her father, George VI. The coronation at Westminster Abbey on 2 June 1953 was watched by 20 million Britons in addition to those present on television screens and radio sets.
Elizabeth II was the formal monarch of Great Britain, the Commonwealth of Nations and other sovereign states, including their territories and dependencies. At the same time, she was the supreme authority of the Church of England. During her 70-year reign, she provided stability and security for her subjects. This devotion earned her respect, which reinforced her reverence for British traditions. In 2022, she celebrated her platinum jubilee as the longest reigning British monarch on record. She died on 8 September 2022 at the age of 96 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland.
The obverse bears a portrait of Elizabeth II by Ian-Rank Broadley, accompanied by the national emblem of Cameroon and the year of issue "2022". The description of the coin states 'ELIZABETH II', 'REPUBLIC OF CAMEROON' and the face value of the coin. The design from the reverse side of the coin is given more space in the background.
The coin comes in a deluxe collector's case which contains the coin housed in a box and protective velvet pouch with the royal crest, a numbered certificate, a scroll with the royal pedigree and a booklet dedicated to the Queen's life and a description of the coin. The mintage is extremely limited to 50 pieces for the whole world!
