Detailed description
Lunar series 2 Oz Silver - Year of the Horse 2026
The Australian Perth Mint's Year of the Horse 2026 silver investment coin, struck in the finest 999.9% silver and weighing 2 Oz (62.2 g), is the seventh coin in the popular Lunar Series III. The theme for 2026 is dedicated to the Year of the Horse, which is said to bring adventure and new challenges.
The two-ounce silver coin bears the year's sign motif on its reverse, which is complemented by the Chinese lunar animal's emblem, its inscription in English and the year of issue for that year.
The obverse of the silver two-ounce coin bears the likeness of King Charles III by Dane Thorne in its centre, together with the initials “DT”. The description of the coin gives the inscriptions “CHARLES III”, “AUSTRALIA”, the face value and the weight and purity of the metal.
The coin has the status of Australian legal tender and comes in a protective plastic capsule.
The Australian Lunar Series of gold and silver investment coins is inspired by the 12-year cycle of the Chinese lunar calendar, which assigns one animal from the zodiac to each year. This calendar, deeply rooted in Chinese culture, is associated with astrology, legends and traditional New Year celebrations. The series begins with the Year of the Mouse (or Rat) and continues through animals such as the Buffalo, Tiger, and Hare, to the Year of the Pig.
The Lunar Series was first introduced in 1996 in pure gold. In 1999, the Australian Perth Mint expanded the series to include a silver variant. Since then, a new coin has been minted each year featuring the animal of the respective lunar year.
Gold investment coins are available in 2 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz sizes in unlimited mintage. The 1 oz version is issued in a limited edition of 30,000 pieces.
Silver investment coins are minted in 1 kg, 5 oz, 2 oz and 1/2 oz sizes in unlimited mintage. The 1 oz version is limited to 300,000 pieces.
The coins are distinguished by precise minting with attention to every detail. The combination of high gloss and a matte to satin background creates a striking contrast that reminds collectors of the quality of the Proof design - even though these are standard quality coins.
The Lunar Series has gained popularity not only among investors, but also among collectors worldwide. Its aesthetic and cultural value make it a unique link between investment, tradition and artistry. To own a Lunar coin is to own a piece of history inspired by thousands of years of Chinese tradition.
